I believe I've made a connection between this WONDERFUL new and challenging teaching opportunity and surfing. Now I have to admit... I've never surfed before. Did try to boogie board in Hawaii during our AMAZING winter vacation and watched my own kids do it for HOURS.
On our last day on Maui, we stopped at the north short and watch some REAL surfers! They were amazing and the waves were HUGE.
As we watched them... I noticed that most of the time they were WORKING HARD to get back out to the waves or WAITING for the right wave. They spend so much more time doing this than RIDING the massive waves. It made me think about my work this 1st year of Jeffco Virtual K-6. I spend hours writing, researching tools, studying our district curriculum and creating digital lessons (fighting the waves). Yet... I do get to RIDE the waves of progress too. Just yesterday a parent sent a short video of her son and his reaction to "What's Up Next" in writing.
So here I go.... surfing my way through the second semester of K/1 online with Jeffco Virtual!
Excellent metaphor! Some waves are bigger than others, but I know you'll beat them all!
