I attended a curriculum focus group on Friday and had the opportunity to talk with other 3rd grade teachers from our district. Note that the district I work in is LARGE. We have 96 elementary schools and they reside in a wide range of diverse neighborhoods.
As we talked about curriculum we shared some of our process that includes technology. I pride myself in embedding technology to support my students. In our classroom we have five student computers, my teacher laptop and also a cart of 8 laptops (which we can easily access but other teachers use often too). I believe having the hardware available and running helps to embed technology. One of the teachers that I was chatting with said she has only her teacher laptop in her classroom. I can't imagine that in a classroom today! She did say that they have laptop carts that they can check out and their PTA is buying them a cart of iPads soon. All this technology is great, but does the access to these carts allow the teachers to really embed technology? This brought me to my two BIG questions...
Can a teacher who has only a teacher laptop embed technology successfully?
Should schools continue to buy "carts" of technology or should we all work towards a 1 on 1 model?
